Carbohydrate is a real component of the plasma membrane, attached to its proteins and lipids, and it contributes to the cell's ability to recognise and interact with what is around it.

Early biochemical work on the plasma membrane, much of it carried out on human red blood cells, showed that the membrane is not made purely of lipid and protein. Carbohydrate is present as well, and it is typically found attached to the membrane's protein or lipid components rather than floating freely on its own.

This carbohydrate association is closely linked to the glycoprotein- and glycolipid-forming activity carried out for the cell's proteins in the Golgi apparatus, which modifies and finishes many membrane-destined molecules before they reach the cell surface. …
