In hydroponics, plant roots are grown in water to which all the mineral nutrients the plant needs (macro- and micronutrients) have been dissolved in known, controlled amounts, instead of growing the plant in ordinary soil. The plant may be supported by an inert medium (such as sand, gravel, or a mesh) purely to hold it upright, not to supply nutrients.
This technique was originally developed as a research tool to determine which mineral elements are essential for plant growth, and it remains valuable for that purpose because the exact composition of the nutrient solution can be varied and controlled -- for example, leaving out one particular element lets researchers observe the resulting deficiency symptoms and so establish that the element is essential.
