Imagine you're a plant. Your roots spread through soil, searching for water and the minerals dissolved in it — nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and a dozen others. The soil is just a physical anchor and a reservoir. The real meal is the water with those dissolved nutrients.

Now ask: what if we cut out the middleman? What if we gave the roots exactly the water and minerals they need, directly, without soil at all?

The Precise Statement

Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants in a defined, nutrient-rich water solution, without soil. The roots are suspended in or periodically bathed by a liquid that contains all the essential mineral elements in precisely known concentrations.

Why It Matters for Your Syllabus

Hydroponics isn't just a farming trick. It's the standard method plant physiologists use to determine which elements are essential for a plant and what happens when one is missing.

Here's how it works:

1. Prepare a complete nutrient solution containing all known essential minerals (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, B, Mo, Cl).
2. Grow a plant in it. It develops normally.
3. Now prepare a second solution that is identical except it lacks one element — say, nitrogen.
4. Grow another plant in that. Observe what goes wrong.

The specific symptoms that appear — yellowing leaves, stunted roots, dead spots — are the deficiency symptoms for that missing element. By systematically removing one element at a time, scientists have mapped out exactly what each mineral does.
