Hydroponics is a technique of growing plants in a nutrient solution (water containing dissolved inorganic salts) without using soil at all. An inert medium such as sand, gravel or vermiculite may be used only to physically support the roots — the plant obtains all its mineral nutrition from the solution, not the medium.
Basis: The solution is prepared containing all the macro- and micro-nutrients a plant needs, in the correct proportion and concentration, and is regularly aerated and renewed. This method was central to discovering which elements are essential for plant growth — by omitting one element at a time from the solution (Arnon and Stout's criteria of essentiality were worked out using hydroponic experiments) and observing the resulting deficiency symptoms.
