C3 and C4 plants differ in leaf anatomy and biochemistry: C3 plants lack Kranz anatomy and fix CO2 directly to PGA via RuBisCO; C4 plants have Kranz anatomy, use PEP as the primary CO2 acceptor, and effectively avoid photorespiration.

C3 plants:

  • Kranz anatomy absent — C3 leaves have ordinary mesophyll (palisade + spongy parenchyma) without the characteristic wreath-like ("Kranz") arrangement of bundle-sheath cells seen in C4 plants.
  • First product of CO2 fixation is PGA (3-phosphoglyceric acid) — CO2 is fixed directly by RuBisCO onto RuBP in the Calvin cycle, producing a 3-carbon compound, PGA — this is why these plants are called C3 plants.

C4 plants:

  • Lack photorespiration — because CO2 is concentrated around RuBisCO in the bundle-sheath cells (via the C4 pathway), the oxygenase activity of RuBisCO (which causes photorespiration) is effectively suppressed. …
