A = mesophyll cell, B = bundle sheath cell; the pathway is 'C4' because the first product is a 4-carbon acid; C4 plants are more productive, avoid photorespiration and use water efficiently.

Diagrammatic representation hatch slack pathway

(a) Identifying the cells in the Hatch and Slack pathway:

  • Cell A (where CO2 is first fixed by PEP carboxylase into a C4 acid, then the C4 acid is transported out and the C3 acceptor is regenerated) is the mesophyll cell.
  • Cell B (where the C4 acid is decarboxylated to release CO2, which is then fixed by the Calvin cycle to form a C3 acid) is the bundle sheath cell.

(b) Why it is called the C4 pathway: The very first stable product formed when CO2 is fixed in the mesophyll cell is oxaloacetic acid (OAA), a 4-carbon compound. Because the first fixation product has four carbon atoms, the pathway is named the C4 pathway.

(c) Three advantages of C4 plants over C3 plants:

  • They have a higher rate of photosynthesis and greater productivity. …
