Three salient features of Molecular Orbital Theory:
-
Electrons belong to the molecule as a whole. Instead of an electron being localised on a particular bond or atom (as in valence bond theory), MO theory treats the electrons in a molecule as occupying molecular orbitals that are spread over (belong to) the entire molecule.
-
Molecular orbitals form by linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO). When atomic orbitals of comparable energy and proper symmetry combine, they produce an equal number of molecular orbitals — some bonding MOs (formed by additive/in-phase overlap, lower in energy) and some antibonding MOs (formed by subtractive/out-of-phase overlap, higher in energy).
