Electron gain enthalpy = energy change when a gaseous atom gains an electron. Cl's value is more negative than F's because F's small 2p subshell crowds the added electron (more repulsion).

(i) Electron gain enthalpy (delta(eg)H): the enthalpy change when one mole of electrons is added to one mole of isolated gaseous atoms to form gaseous anions:

A negative value means energy is released (the atom readily accepts the electron).
