Bridged (banana-bond) structure of diborane B2H6 with 3-centre-2-electron bonds
Bridged (banana-bond) structure of diborane B2H6 with 3-centre-2-electron bonds

Prepare B2H6 by, e.g., 2BF3 + 6NaH -> B2H6 + 6NaF. Its structure has 4 terminal B-H bonds and 2 bridging B-H-B three-centre-two-electron bonds.

Preparation (any one method):

  • Industrial: 2BF3 + 6NaH --(450 K)--> B2H6 + 6NaF.
  • Laboratory: 2NaBH4 + I2 -> B2H6 + 2NaI + H2 (or from BF3 with LiAlH4).

Structure of diborane (B2H6):

  • It is an electron-deficient molecule (only 12 valence electrons for 8 bonds).
  • Each boron is bonded to two TERMINAL hydrogens by ordinary two-centre-two-electron (2c-2e) bonds -> 4 terminal B-H bonds.
  • Two BRIDGING hydrogen atoms each bind to BOTH borons through three-centre-two-electron (3c-2e) 'banana' bonds (B-H-B). …
