Capillary rise is the rising of a wetting liquid inside a fine tube above the surrounding free-surface level, and it is caused by surface tension acting at the curved liquid meniscus inside the narrow tube.

Capillary rise: When a narrow (capillary) tube is dipped vertically into a liquid such as water, the liquid inside the tube rises to a level noticeably higher than the free surface of the liquid outside the tube. This rise is greater the narrower the tube.
