Figure — v-t step graph derived from the given x-t graph
Figure — v-t step graph derived from the given x-t graph

The x–t graph is two straight-line segments (constant slope each), so the velocity is constant (but different) on each segment; the object returns to its starting point, so its total displacement is zero.

Read the two segments of the x–t graph:

Segment 1 (0 to 3 s): x goes from 0 m to 6 m.

v₁ = Δx/Δt = (6 − 0)/(3 − 0) = 2 m/s

Segment 2 (3 to 5 s): x goes from 6 m back to 0 m.

v₂ = Δx/Δt = (0 − 6)/(5 − 3) = −3 m/s

Since each segment of the x–t graph is a straight line, the velocity is constant within each segment, so the v–t graph is two horizontal steps:

• v = +2 m/s from t = 0 to t = 3 s

• v = −3 m/s from t = 3 s to t = 5 s

with a sudden (discontinuous) jump from +2 m/s to −3 m/s at t = 3 s.
