Starting from the definition of uniform acceleration as the constant rate of change of velocity, a simple rearrangement gives v = u + at.

Consider a body moving with initial velocity u. Let it undergo uniform (constant) acceleration a and after a time t attain a final velocity v.

By definition, acceleration is the rate of change of velocity:

a = (change in velocity) / (time taken) = (v − u) / t

Since the acceleration is uniform (constant), this ratio itself is constant. Rearranging for v:

a t = v − u

v = u + at
