Water shows anomalous behaviour: as it is heated from 0°C, its volume first shrinks until 4°C (maximum density) and only then starts increasing like a normal liquid.

Most substances expand continuously as temperature increases. Water is an exception in the range 0°C to 4°C: as its temperature rises from 0°C, its volume actually DECREASES up to 4°C, and only above 4°C does it start increasing in the normal way. This unusual behaviour is called the anomalous expansion of water.

Description of the graph (Volume V on the y-axis vs Temperature T on the x-axis, starting at 0°C):

  • The curve starts at some volume V₀ at T = 0°C.
  • As T increases from 0°C to 4°C, the curve slopes DOWNWARD — volume decreases, reaching a minimum value at T = 4°C.
  • At T = 4°C, the curve has its lowest point (a minimum) — this is where volume is minimum, and since density = mass/volume, this is where density is MAXIMUM. …
