Between 0°C and 4°C water behaves oppositely to normal substances — it CONTRACTS as it is heated — with density maximum at 4°C; this reversal is the anomalous expansion of water.

Most substances expand uniformly (their volume increases and density decreases) as their temperature rises. Water, however, shows an unusual departure from this behaviour near its freezing point:

  • As water is heated from 0°C to 4°C, its volume DECREASES (it contracts), so its density INCREASES.
  • At 4°C, water's density reaches a MAXIMUM.
  • On heating further beyond 4°C, water behaves normally again — its volume increases and density decreases, as expected.

This reversed behaviour between 0°C and 4°C, where water contracts instead of expanding on heating, is called the anomalous expansion (or anomalous behaviour) of water.
