AB blood lacks plasma antibodies, so it accepts any ABO group (universal recipient); example circulatory disorders are hypertension and coronary artery disease.

(a) In the ABO system, the plasma antibodies determine which blood a person can receive. AB blood group carries both antigen A and antigen B on the red cells but has neither anti-A nor anti-B antibody in the plasma. Since there are no antibodies to react with the donor's A or B antigens, a person with AB blood can receive red cells of A, B, AB or O groups without agglutination - therefore called a 'universal recipient'.
