ECG is the electrical "signature" of the heartbeat, picked up by electrodes on the body surface and plotted as voltage against time. Each cardiac cycle produces a fixed sequence of waves — P, QRS, T — that correspond to depolarisation and repolarisation of the atria and ventricles.

  1. What is ECG? Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is the graphical record of the electrical activity of the heart during a cardiac cycle, obtained using an instrument called an electrocardiograph. Since contraction of heart muscle is triggered by an electrical impulse (generated by the SA node and spread via the conducting system), this activity can be picked up by electrodes placed on the surface of the body and displayed as a wave-form on a chart or screen.
  2. The standard ECG and its waves A standard ECG trace (as normally drawn in the textbook) is a series of the following deflections repeated once per heartbeat, plotted on a baseline (the isoelectric line):
        R
        |\
   P /| \
  /\ / | \
_/ \/ | \_______
        | \ /
        Q \/
S T (a small rounded hump after QRS)
  • P wave: A small upward wave that represents the depolarisation (excitation) of both atria, which leads to atrial contraction. …
