The portion of a myofibril between two successive Z-lines is called a sarcomere — the functional/structural unit of striated muscle contraction.

Each myofibril is a repeating series of sarcomeres. A sarcomere is bounded on both sides by a Z-line (Z-disc), and contains an orderly arrangement of thick (myosin) and thin (actin) filaments — producing the A-band (dark, spans the thick filaments), the I-band (light, only thin filaments, bisected by the Z-line), and the H-zone (the central region of the A-band where only thick filaments are present, no overlap).
