[!TLDR]

A myofibril is a cylindrical organelle within a skeletal muscle fibre, made of repeating contractile units called sarcomeres arranged end to end. Each sarcomere is bound on either side by a Z-line (Z-disc). Thin filaments (actin) are attached to the Z-line and project toward the centre of the sarcomere, while thick filaments (myosin) occupy the central region. The region containing only thick filaments appears as a dark band called the A-band, within which lies a lighter zone called the H-zone that contains only thick filaments (no overlapping actin), bisected by an M-line. The region containing only thin filaments on either side of the Z-line appears as a light band called the I-band. During muscle contraction, the actin filaments slide over the myosin filaments (sliding filament theory), shortening the I-band and H-zone while the A-band length stays constant.
