Figure — Labelled vertical/sagittal (longitudinal) section of the human eye drawn as a roughly spherical eyeb

In this front cross-section of the eye, A is the lens, B is the iris (whose radial muscle fibres control pupil width), and C is the cornea, the transparent outer covering through which light first enters.

A — the biconvex, lens-shaped structure just inside the front of the eye: This is the Lens, a transparent, elastic, biconvex structure held in place behind the pupil by suspensory ligaments (zonules) attached to the ciliary body. It fine-focuses light onto the retina by changing its curvature (accommodation).

B — short radiating/fibrous structures near the front rim, just anterior to C: This is the Iris, the pigmented, muscular diaphragm lying in front of the lens. It has both radial (dilator) and circular (sphincter) muscle fibres — the "radiating" fibrous appearance in the diagram corresponds to these iris muscles — which contract/relax to regulate the diameter of the central opening, the pupil, controlling how much light enters the eye.
