Staffing follows an orderly process: estimate manpower needs, recruit and select the right candidates, place and orient them, train and develop them, appraise their performance, promote/plan careers, and pay fair compensation — each step building on the previous one to put and keep competent people in every job.

Staffing is a key management function covered in the Staffing chapter of Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce, whose content aligns with the NCERT Business Studies curriculum. Because getting the right person into the right job is complex, it is done through the following steps:

  • 1. Estimating manpower requirements (HR planning): The organisation forecasts how many people, with what skills and qualifications, will be needed. This involves workload analysis and workforce analysis to find the gap between required and existing manpower.
  • 2. Recruitment: This is the process of searching for prospective employees and inducing them to apply for jobs. Sources may be internal (transfers, promotions) or external (advertisements, employment exchanges, campus recruitment). It creates a pool of applicants.
  • 3. Selection: From the pool of applicants, the most suitable candidates are chosen through tests, interviews and checks. Selection is a screening process that rejects unsuitable applicants and ensures the best fit for the job.
  • 4. Placement and orientation: The selected candidate is placed on the actual job, and orientation (induction) introduces the new employee to the organisation, colleagues, rules and work, helping them settle in.
  • 5. Training and development: Employees are given training to improve their present job skills and development opportunities to prepare them for future/higher responsibilities. This raises efficiency and morale. …
