Selection is the process of picking the right person for the right job from a pool of applicants. It is a series of hurdles — preliminary screening, selection tests, employment interview, reference/background checks, selection decision, medical examination, job offer and contract of employment — through which unsuitable candidates are progressively eliminated.

Selection is the process of choosing from among the pool of prospective job candidates developed at the stage of recruitment. It is a negative process because it involves rejecting unsuitable candidates and picking only the most suitable ones. In the Plus Two Business Studies (Staffing) chapter, selection is carried out through the following successive steps.

1. Preliminary screening. After receiving applications, the organisation does an initial screening to eliminate candidates who clearly do not meet the basic job requirements in terms of age, qualification, experience, etc. This shortlists applicants for further consideration and saves time.

2. Selection tests. Shortlisted candidates undergo one or more employment tests to assess their suitability — such as intelligence tests, aptitude tests, personality tests, trade/proficiency tests and interest tests. These help measure abilities and traits that are not obvious from the application.

3. Employment interview. The interview is a formal, in-depth conversation between the candidate and the employer to evaluate the candidate's suitability and to give the candidate information about the job and the organisation. It allows two-way exchange of information.

4. Reference and background checks. The organisation verifies the information supplied by the candidate and enquires about the candidate's character, conduct and past record from the references (persons named by the applicant) and other sources.

5. Selection decision. From among the candidates who pass the tests, interview and reference checks, the final selection is made. The views of the concerned manager (who will supervise the person) are given weight at this stage.

6. Medical examination. The selected candidate is asked to undergo a medical/physical fitness test to ensure that he or she is physically fit for the job. This protects both the organisation and the candidate.
