In Kerala Plus Two (DHSE) Commerce staffing, selection is the process of picking the right person for the job and rejecting the unsuitable. The procedure is a series of screening steps: preliminary screening, selection tests, employment interview, reference/background checks, selection decision, medical examination, job offer and finally the contract of employment.

Selection is the process of identifying and choosing the best-suited candidates for various jobs from among the pool of applicants generated through recruitment. It is a negative process, as it involves the rejection of unsuitable candidates. The selection procedure generally consists of the following steps, arranged as a series of hurdles a candidate must clear:

  1. Preliminary screening: The applications received are screened to eliminate candidates who clearly do not meet the basic job requirements (qualifications, age, experience), so that only eligible applicants move to the next stage.

  2. Selection tests: Suitable candidates are given tests to assess their abilities — intelligence tests, aptitude tests, personality tests, trade/proficiency tests and interest tests — which help predict how well they will perform on the job.

  3. Employment interview: A formal, in-depth conversation is held to evaluate the candidate's suitability. The interviewer seeks information from the candidate and also gives the candidate information about the job and the organisation.

  4. Reference and background checks: The details and references supplied by the candidate (previous employers, teachers, other persons) are verified to confirm the candidate's background, character and past performance.

  5. Selection decision: From among the candidates who clear the tests, interview and reference checks, the final selection is made by the manager of the concerned department.

  6. Medical/physical examination: The selected candidate is medically examined to ensure that he/she is physically fit to perform the job. Some organisations conduct this before the final decision.
