Consider a market where there are just two consumers and suppose their demands for the good are given as follows:
| 1 | 9 | 24 |
| 2 | 8 | 20 |
| 3 | 7 | 18 |
| 4 | 6 | 16 |
| 5 | 5 | 14 |
| 6 | 4 | 12 |

Why we aggregate horizontally
Market demand tells us the total quantity all consumers together are willing to buy at each price. Because individual demand schedules already tell us how much each person wants at a given price, we simply add those quantities. This is called horizontal summation: at price , consumer 1 wants 9 units and consumer 2 wants 24 units, so the market absorbs units at that price.
The logic is straightforward. Price is the same for everyone in a competitive market (the "going rate"), but people differ in their willingness and ability to buy. One person may want 9 units at ₹1, another 24 — the market clears the combined 33 units. We repeat this addition at every price point.
We sum quantities at each price, not the other way around. Adding prices at a given quantity would be economically meaningless — you cannot charge two different prices simultaneously in the same market.
Calculating market demand
For each row, compute :
| 1 | 9 | 24 | 33 |
| 2 | 8 | 20 | 28 |
| 3 | 7 | 18 | 25 |
| 4 | 6 | 16 | 22 |
| 5 | 5 | 14 | 19 |
| 6 | 4 | 12 | 16 |
At , market demand is . At , it is , and so on. Notice that as price rises, both individual demands fall (the law of demand), so market demand also falls — from 33 units at ₹1 down to 16 units at ₹6. …
