Market demand depends on the good's own price, prices of related goods, consumers' income, tastes and fashion, the size of population, and the distribution of income.

Market demand for a commodity is the total quantity of the commodity that all consumers in the market are willing and able to buy at various prices during a given period. It is affected by the following six factors:

  1. Price of the commodity itself — This is the most important factor. According to the law of demand, other things being equal, when the price of the commodity falls, its quantity demanded rises, and when the price rises, quantity demanded falls (inverse relationship). A change in the good's own price causes a movement along the demand curve.

  2. Prices of related goods —

    1. Substitute goods (e.g. tea and coffee): a rise in the price of one substitute increases the demand for the other.
    2. Complementary goods (e.g. car and petrol): a rise in the price of one reduces the demand for the other.
  3. Income of the consumers — For normal goods, market demand rises as consumers' incomes rise; for inferior goods, demand falls as income rises (consumers switch to superior substitutes).

  4. Tastes, preferences and fashion — Favourable changes in tastes, habits, fashion, advertising or climate increase demand, while unfavourable changes reduce it. For example, demand for woollen clothes rises in winter.

  5. Size and composition of population — A larger population means more consumers, so market demand is greater. The composition (age, sex) of the population also affects the demand for particular goods (e.g. more children raise the demand for toys).
