Energy flow through an ecosystem is unidirectional and, at every trophic-level transfer, a large fraction (roughly 90%, per the ten percent law) is lost as heat to the surroundings through respiration and other life processes — so the energy content must always decrease from producers to top carnivores, making the pyramid of energy always upright.

As shown in the figure, of the enormous input of solar energy (1,000,000 J), only a small fraction is captured by producers (PP, 10,000 J), and at each subsequent trophic level — primary consumers (PC, 1,000 J), secondary consumers (SC, 100 J), tertiary consumers (TC, 10 J) — the energy value drops by roughly a factor of ten.

This progressive decline happens because:

  1. Energy flow in an ecosystem is unidirectional (from sun → producers → consumers) and follows the laws of thermodynamics; energy is not recycled the way matter/nutrients are.
  2. At each trophic transfer, organisms use a large part of the energy they receive for their own respiration and metabolic activities, and this is lost to the environment as heat — it can never be reused by the ecosystem as biologically useful energy.
  3. Consequently, according to the ten percent law, only about 10% of the energy received at one trophic level is available for transfer to the next trophic level; the remaining ~90% is lost as heat or is used up in respiration/metabolism, or remains unutilised. …
