The pyramid of energy is always upright because energy is progressively lost as heat at every trophic transfer (second law of thermodynamics); the other two ecological pyramids are the pyramid of numbers and the pyramid of biomass.

  1. Why the pyramid of energy is always upright: Energy flow through an ecosystem is unidirectional — energy captured by producers flows to herbivores, then to carnivores, and so on, and is never recycled back. At each trophic transfer, a large proportion of the energy received (typically about 90%) is lost to the environment as heat during respiration and other metabolic activities (in line with the second law of thermodynamics), and only about 10% is available to the next trophic level. Because energy is progressively lost at every step, the energy content of a trophic level is always less than the level below it that it depends on. Consequently, when plotted (as in the given figure — 1,000,000 J of sunlight → P 10,000 J → PC 1,000 J → SC 100 J → TC 10 J), the pyramid of energy is always broadest at the base (producers) and narrows steadily towards the top — it is always upright and can never be inverted, regardless of the ecosystem.
