Although ecological pyramids (of number, biomass and energy) are a useful way to represent trophic structure, they have several limitations, including their inability to accommodate species occupying multiple trophic levels, food webs, and decomposers.

Ecological pyramids illustrate trophic relationships by stacking producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers and so on. However, they have important limitations, including:
