Individual, everyday choices add up to meaningfully reduce pollution:

  • Reduce vehicular emissions: prefer public transport, carpooling, cycling or walking over using a private vehicle for short trips; keep vehicles well-maintained and use cleaner fuels (CNG/unleaded petrol) where possible.
  • Conserve energy: switch off appliances and lights when not in use, and choose energy-efficient devices, since a large share of pollution originates from power generation.
  • Practise the 3 Rs — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: minimise consumption of single-use items (especially plastics), reuse containers and materials wherever possible, and recycle paper, glass, metal and plastic instead of discarding them.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly: segregate biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste at source, compost kitchen/organic waste, and never dispose of e-waste, batteries or chemicals with regular household trash.
  • Avoid open burning: never burn garbage, plastic or crop residue, as this directly releases particulate matter and toxic gases into the air.
  • Reduce chemical use: limit the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers in gardens, and prefer eco-friendly cleaning products.
