Definition: A bisexual flower (also called a hermaphrodite or perfect flower) is a flower that possesses both male and female reproductive whorls in the same flower:

  • The androecium (whorl of stamens) — the male reproductive part, which produces pollen grains.
  • The gynoecium (pistil/carpel) — the female reproductive part, which contains the ovary, style and stigma, and produces the egg.

Because both sexes are present together, such flowers can, in principle, self-pollinate (though many bisexual flowers have mechanisms to promote cross-pollination instead).

Illustrative examples of common bisexual flowers (common name — scientific name):

  • China rose / Shoe-flower — Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
  • Mustard — Brassica campestris (or Brassica juncea)
  • Petunia — Petunia hybrida
  • Datura — Datura metel
  • Tomato — Solanum lycopersicum

(Other common bisexual flowers include rose — Rosa indica; brinjal — Solanum melongena; and chilli — Capsicum annuum.) …
