Bio-fortification is the breeding of crops with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, proteins or healthier fats, aimed at reducing malnutrition in the population. This approach has produced several nutritionally improved crop varieties, including:
- Maize hybrids — Shakti, Rattan and Protina — bred to contain nearly twice the amount of the essential amino acids lysine and tryptophan compared to ordinary maize.
- Wheat variety Atlas 66 — bred for a much higher protein content than ordinary wheat.
- Vitamin-A enriched carrot, spinach and pumpkin — vegetables bred/selected to carry significantly higher Vitamin-A content.
