Both temperature and catalysts speed up reactions, but by different mechanisms — temperature increases the fraction of molecules with enough energy to react, while a catalyst lowers the energy barrier itself.

Effect of temperature

According to the Arrhenius equation, k = A e^(−Ea/RT), the rate constant increases exponentially with temperature. As temperature rises, the average kinetic energy of the reacting molecules increases, so a larger fraction of molecules possess energy equal to or greater than the activation energy (Ea) — shown by the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve shifting and broadening at higher T, with a bigger area beyond Ea. This increases the frequency of effective collisions, and hence the rate of reaction. As a rule of thumb, the rate of many reactions roughly doubles for every 10°C rise in temperature.
