Activation energy is the minimum energy barrier for a reaction; a catalyst lowers this barrier and speeds up the reaction.

(i) During a reaction, reactant molecules must reach an activated (transition) state before products form. The activation energy Ea is the difference between the threshold energy of this activated state and the average energy of the reactant molecules. Only molecules with energy >= Ea can react on collision.
