A catalyst speeds up a reaction by lowering the activation energy (offering a new pathway); it does not alter the enthalpy, free energy, or equilibrium position.

Concept. According to the Arrhenius equation k=A e−Ea/RTk = A\,e^{-E_a/RT}, the rate constant kk rises steeply as the activation energy EaE_a falls.

Effect of a catalyst:

  1. A catalyst provides an alternative reaction path with a lower activation energy EaE_a. More reactant molecules now have energy ≥Ea\ge E_a, so the number of effective collisions increases and the reaction rate increases.
  2. It lowers EaE_a for both the forward and backward reactions by the same amount, so it speeds up both equally.
  3. It does not change the thermodynamics: ΔH\Delta H, ΔG\Delta G and KeqK_{eq} are unaffected. A catalyst only helps the system reach equilibrium faster, not shift it. …
