(a) Classification by molecular/intermolecular forces
Polymers are classified based on the strength of intermolecular forces:
- Elastomers: very weak intermolecular forces; chains are held by weak van der Waals forces and can be stretched considerably and spring back — this includes natural Rubber and synthetic rubbers like Buna-S (a copolymer of butadiene and styrene).
- Fibres: strong intermolecular forces (hydrogen bonding or dipole–dipole interactions) between closely-packed, linear chains giving high tensile strength and crystallinity — this includes Nylon 6,6 (a polyamide, strong H-bonding between amide groups) and Terylene/Dacron (a polyester, PET, strong dipole interactions). So: Elastomers = Rubber, Buna-S; Fibres = Nylon 6,6, Terylene.
