Thermoplastics can be repeatedly softened and remoulded, while thermosetting plastics cross-link irreversibly on moulding; neoprene is the polymer of chloroprene (2-chlorobuta-1,3-diene).

(i) Thermoplastics vs thermosetting plastics:

  • Thermoplastic polymers: these consist of linear or slightly branched long chains, held together by relatively weak intermolecular forces (van der Waals forces). They soften on heating and harden again on cooling, and this can be repeated multiple times, so they can be remoulded/reshaped/recycled. Examples: polythene, polystyrene, PVC.

  • Thermosetting polymers: these are formed from monomers/prepolymers that, on heating, undergo extensive cross-linking to form a rigid, hard, infusible three-dimensional network. This change is permanent and irreversible - once set/moulded, they cannot be softened or remoulded again by heating. Examples: bakelite, melamine-formaldehyde resin, urea-formaldehyde resin.

(ii) Monomer of neoprene: neoprene is a synthetic rubber (elastomer) formed by the free-radical polymerisation of chloroprene.
