Step 1 – Definition. In an associated colloid, the surfactant molecules exist as simple ions at low concentration but, at higher concentration, aggregate into clusters called micelles. The formation of micelles takes place only:

  • above a characteristic concentration, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) (for soaps ≈ 10−410^{-4}–10−310^{-3} mol L−1^{-1}), and
  • above a characteristic temperature, the Kraft temperature (TkT_k).
