The impedance of a series LCR circuit combines resistance and net reactance; the circuit is tuned to a station's frequency at resonance, where inductive and capacitive reactances cancel.

  1. Impedance: In a series LCR circuit driven by an ac source, the resistor, inductor and capacitor voltages combine as phasors (VLV_L leads current by 90°, VCV_C lags by 90°, exactly opposite each other). The net impedance is: Z=R2+(XL−XC)2,where XL=ωL, XC=1ωCZ = \sqrt{R^2 + (X_L - X_C)^2}, \quad \text{where } X_L = \omega L,\ X_C = \dfrac{1}{\omega C}
  2. Condition for tuning: The circuit is used to tune a radio at resonance, when the reactances cancel: XL=XCX_L = X_C, i.e. ω0L=1ω0C  ⟹  ω0=1LC\omega_0 L = \dfrac{1}{\omega_0 C} \implies \omega_0 = \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{LC}} …
