Materials are classified by how their atomic magnetic moments respond to an external field: diamagnetics are weakly repelled, paramagnetics are weakly attracted, and ferromagnetics are strongly attracted and can stay magnetised.

Diamagnetic substances: Atoms have no net (permanent) magnetic moment. When placed in an external field, they develop a small induced magnetisation opposite to the field, so they are feebly repelled by a magnet and tend to move from stronger to weaker field regions. Susceptibility χ\chi is small and negative, and (nearly) independent of temperature. Examples: bismuth, copper, water, gold.

Paramagnetic substances: Atoms have a net permanent magnetic moment (due to unpaired electrons), but these are randomly oriented by thermal agitation in the absence of a field, giving zero net magnetisation. In an external field, the moments partially align with the field, producing weak magnetisation along the field, so these substances are feebly attracted and move from weaker to stronger field regions. Susceptibility χ\chi is small and positive, and decreases with increasing temperature (Curie's law: χ∝1/T\chi \propto 1/T). Examples: aluminium, sodium, platinum, oxygen.
