Diamagnetic substances: Their atoms have no permanent magnetic moment; an external field induces a small moment in each atom that opposes the field (Lenz's-law-like effect on the orbiting electrons). They are weakly repelled by a magnet, moving from stronger to weaker field regions. Susceptibility is small and negative, temperature-independent. Examples: bismuth, copper, water, gold, antimony.
Paramagnetic substances: Their atoms/molecules have a permanent (but randomly oriented) magnetic moment. An external field partially aligns these moments, so the material is weakly attracted, moving from weaker to stronger field regions. Susceptibility is small and positive, and decreases with rising temperature (Curie's law, , since thermal agitation disturbs the alignment). Examples: aluminium, sodium, platinum, liquid oxygen.
