(a) Ray diagram of a simple microscope (image at the near point D): A convex lens of short focal length is used as a simple microscope. The object O is placed between the lens and its focus (within focal length f), so that the lens forms a virtual, erect, magnified image on the same side as the object. Two representative rays are drawn from the top of the object: (i) a ray parallel to the principal axis, which after refraction passes through the focus F on the far side; (ii) a ray directed towards the optical centre, which passes through undeviated. These two refracted rays diverge on the far side, but appear to meet (when produced backward) at a point on the near side — this is the virtual image I.
