Homologous organs share the same basic structure/origin but may perform different functions (divergent evolution); analogous organs perform the same function but have different structures/origins (convergent evolution).

Homologous organs — same basic structural plan and evolutionary origin, adapted for different functions in different organisms:

  • Forelimb of whale and bat — both are built on the same pentadactyl limb plan (inherited from a common mammalian ancestor), but the whale's is modified into a flipper for swimming while the bat's is modified into a wing for flying.
  • Heart of man and cheetah — both are mammals descended from a common ancestor, so their four-chambered hearts share the same basic structural plan and perform the same function.

Analogous organs — different structural plan/origin, but perform a similar function due to adaptation to similar needs (convergent evolution): …
