Homologous organs diverge from a common origin (divergent evolution); analogous organs converge on a similar function from different origins (convergent evolution).

Homologous organs are structures with the same basic structural plan and origin but different functions in different organisms — e.g., the forelimbs of frogs, lizards, birds, and mammals share a common pentadactyl origin but are adapted for walking, flying, swimming, etc. Because these related species diverged from a common ancestor and their organs took on different forms/functions to suit different environments, this pattern is called divergent evolution — it indicates common ancestry (homology).
