Certain anaerobic bacteria (methanogens) digest organic/cellulosic waste and release methane-rich biogas, which is harnessed as a renewable fuel — the clearest example of microbes acting as a source of energy.

A group of bacteria called methanogens (e.g. Methanobacterium) live anaerobically in large numbers in the rumen of cattle (and other ruminants), where they help digest cellulose and, as a by-product, release large amounts of methane gas along with CO2 and hydrogen. Cattle dung is therefore rich in these bacteria, and is commonly used as raw material (along with other agricultural/animal waste) in biogas plants ('gobar gas' plants) built in rural households. In an anaerobic sludge digester, the methanogenic bacteria break down the organic waste and release biogas, a mixture predominantly of methane, which burns readily.
