The statement is true. India's renowned handicraft industries collapsed under colonial rule because of discriminatory British policy and the flooding of Indian markets with cheap machine-made British goods. This ruin caused mass unemployment and made India dependent on imported manufactures.

The concept of decline of handicrafts

Before colonial rule, India was known the world over for its handicraft industries — its cotton and silk textiles, metal and precious-stone work were prized in foreign markets for their quality and craftsmanship. Under the British, these industries declined sharply. This is why the statement that traditional handicrafts were ruined is agreed with.

Reasons in support of this view

  • Discriminatory tariff policy — the British used tariffs and duties that favoured British goods and worked against Indian handicrafts, so that Indian products could not compete even at home.
  • Cheap machine-made imports — the Indian market was flooded with cheap manufactured goods from Britain, produced in factories at low cost, which undersold the hand-made Indian products.
  • Loss of patronage — with the decline of the princely states and courts, the handicrafts lost their traditional patrons who used to buy them.
  • No replacement industry — crucially, the destruction of handicrafts was not accompanied by the growth of modern industry. So the artisans who lost their old work had nowhere else to go.
