Carbon dioxide, produced by tissues during cellular respiration, diffuses into the blood and is transported to the lungs in three forms:
-
Dissolved in plasma (~7%) — a small fraction of CO2 dissolves directly in the plasma and is carried in simple solution.
-
As carbamino-haemoglobin (~20-25%) — CO2 binds directly (without the help of an enzyme) to the amino groups of the globin part of haemoglobin (not to the heme/iron, which carries O2), forming carbamino-haemoglobin. This binding is favoured when O2 concentration is low, as in tissues.
