Prokaryotic cells are small, lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, and have a simple internal organization.

Main features of a prokaryotic cell:

  1. No true (membrane-bound) nucleus — the genetic material (a single circular DNA) lies free in the cytoplasm as a nucleoid; it may also carry small circular plasmids.
  2. Absence of membrane-bound organelles — no mitochondria, chloroplasts, ER, Golgi body, etc.; metabolic functions occur on the cell membrane or specialized infoldings called mesosomes.
  3. Cell wall — present in most prokaryotes, made of peptidoglycan (murein) in bacteria, providing shape and protection; may be surrounded by a slime layer or capsule.
  4. Small ribosomes — 70S type (50S + 30S subunits), scattered in the cytoplasm.
  5. Small size — typically 1-10 micrometres, much smaller than eukaryotic cells. …
