Soil and rock are poor thermal conductors, so the water deep in a well is thermally insulated from the rapidly changing surface temperature, staying relatively cool in summer and relatively warm in winter.

The ground (soil, rock) surrounding a well is a poor conductor of heat, so heat exchange between the well water and the outside surface air is very slow.
