Longitudinal waves have particle motion along the wave direction (e.g. sound in air); transverse waves have particle motion perpendicular to it (e.g. waves on a string).

Key differences:

  1. Direction of vibration: In a longitudinal wave, the particles of the medium oscillate parallel to (along) the direction of wave propagation. In a transverse wave, the particles oscillate perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.

  2. Pattern produced: A longitudinal wave produces alternate regions of compression (particles crowded together) and rarefaction (particles spread apart). A transverse wave produces alternate crests (upward displacement) and troughs (downward displacement).
