Transverse and longitudinal waves differ in vibration direction, wave shape, the media they travel through, and whether they can be polarised.

  1. Direction of particle vibration: In a transverse wave, particles of the medium vibrate PERPENDICULAR to the direction in which the wave travels (e.g., a wave on a stretched string, or light). In a longitudinal wave, particles vibrate PARALLEL to (along the same line as) the direction of wave travel (e.g., sound waves in air).

  2. Shape of disturbance: A transverse wave produces alternating CRESTS (regions of maximum positive displacement) and TROUGHS (regions of maximum negative displacement). A longitudinal wave produces alternating COMPRESSIONS (regions of higher density/pressure) and RAREFACTIONS (regions of lower density/pressure).

  3. Medium required: Mechanical transverse waves require a medium that can resist shearing (change of shape), so they typically travel through solids and along the surface of liquids, but not through the bulk of liquids or gases (electromagnetic transverse waves are an exception, needing no medium at all). Longitudinal (mechanical) waves only need a medium that can be compressed, so they can travel through solids, liquids, AND gases -- this is why sound (a longitudinal wave) can travel through air, water, and solids.
