The placenta is the connecting tissue between foetus and uterine wall that mediates exchange of nutrients, gases and wastes, and secretes hormones.

After implantation, finger-like projections called chorionic villi from the embryo grow into the uterine tissue, and together they form the placenta. It is structurally and functionally connected to the developing foetus by the umbilical cord. Through the placenta, oxygen and nutrients pass from the mother's blood to the foetus, while carbon dioxide and nitrogenous wastes pass from the foetus to the mother; the two bloodstreams do not mix directly.
